The Legacy of Wissels Distillery
A century of history in every drop
Wissels Jenever Distillery, founded in 1920, was more than just a distillery - it was the beating heart of Hasselt's jenever tradition. For three generations, the Wissels family perfected their craft, combining traditional distilling techniques with innovation.
For Peter Nulens, founder of Lekker Limburgs, Wissels was more than a supplier. As a regular visitor to the distillery, he learned the fine art of distilling. This deep connection formed the foundation for his later enterprise.
Although the distillery closed its doors in 2016, the spirit of Wissels lives on. As a tribute to master distiller Roland Wissels, founder of the National Jenever Museum, Peter launched the 'Roland Wissels jenever' - distilled according to the authentic family recipe.
Hasselt: Jenever Capital of Belgium
500 years of jenever tradition
Hasselt has been known as Belgium's jenever capital for over five centuries. In the 19th century, the city boasted no fewer than 19 active distilleries that exported their products far beyond national borders.
The National Jenever Museum in Hasselt, co-founded by Roland Wissels, preserves this rich history. Visitors can follow the evolution of the distilling process and even taste authentic jenevers.
Today, Lekker Limburgs continues this tradition with a careful selection of the best Limburg jenevers, each with its own story and character.
